Have you read it? I read The Kite Runner about 5 years ago and am ashamed to say that my memory of it is cloudy, except that i remember how much it moved me. Must re-read or watch the film.
Events unravel against the backdrop of Afghanistan. The book focuses mostly on the friendship formed via a sequence of tragic events between two women, Mariam and Laila, born two decades apart.
The book starts in 1978 and concludes in 2003. I found the story to be well interwoven with actual historical events. It offers perspective by highlighting the struggle for young people growing up in a poor and corrupt country at war. It also offers insight into the horrendous treatment of Afghan girls and women at the hands of men.
I cannot imagine having no right to education. I cannot imagine not being allowed out in public a) without a burka and b) without the company of a man.
If you can get your hands on a copy of this book, i would encourage you to read it. The story is so so sad but so so beautiful at the same time.
