I spent the last night in our rented apartment listening to Aretha Franklin, with a glass of white wine whilst going over the past 5 years in Montreuil.
For the past 9 years I’ve lived with my boyfriend and having a room of my own has always been of the utmost importance to me (the scars of boarding school rearing their ugly head). It wasn’t a luxury afforded to us in our first Parisian apartment but we were on the doorstep of Chinatown so I consider that some sort of compensation.
I look back and smile at how concerned we were about moving from the city centre out to Montreuil, which is a significantly calmer place. It took us about 5 minutes to adapt to the peace and quiet - for us this is the best of both worlds. There are those who would never dream of leaving the city and I respect that but for Jon and I, well we have stressful jobs so we welcome the escape in the evenings and on the weekend.
That’s why we wanted to buy a property in Montreuil. Going back into the city would have been hard (first world problems I know). Timing is everything and the right place came along at the right time. I walked into the house and soon felt an overwhelming urge to cry - this was a coup de coeur I later realised. We put an offer down that same day and thus began the paperwork, bank transfers and putting our signature on so. many. pieces. of. paper. It would be of no surprise if someone pops up in a few years, waving a piece of paper with my signature on it and claiming the right to one or more of my body parts.
So if I take stock of the past 5 years, what sticks? Lots of social gatherings with dear friends, some great meals both made and eaten with love, and fun memories created with family and friends, thanks to a great sound system and unlimited access to 90’s music. It took us time but we picked out the furniture we both wanted to fill the apartment with. I finally acquired my own sacred space (the reading nook) that Jon could only enter upon invitation but the apartment was always a safe haven for me.
What comes next? We’ve now moved and have a kitchen, a living room and dining area that can actually host people. Our clothes and books are currently in boxes scattered around the apartment but we’re doing a little bit every day. There’s a garden that needs some work - a project I’m looking forward to as it’s completely new to me. We plan to do some minor work in both bathrooms but for now we’re letting our current furniture settle in. And more memories to be made with loved ones, of course. I’m looking forward to all of it!
